All poetry has to do is to make a strong communication. All the poet has to do is listen. The poet is not an important fellow. There will also be another poet. ~Stevie Smith

Strong communication with self is where poetry starts. And when that is not present, it is a wasteland.
Funny you say- I just wrote the first poem in ten years or so- thought I'd try my hand at it again. It turned out so different than I thought it would- a lot of violent imagry- I wonder where that came from? Hmmmmm.
brian- yes, I'd agree. Just like graphics, it can be pretty, but if it doesn't communicate - it's not working....

lp- I guess after 10 years, you'd have some pent up anger. Good for you for letting it out! Keep if flowing and watch it transform.
susan- I think in degrees. It a matter of not letting the ego get in the way of the writing. I do know that we will be replaced and that is okay. Let someone else express... You might enjoy this week's prompt "Process/Craft at: One Deep Breath
Not many who have ever been deeply impressed by Stevie Smith would agree with her dismissive words, especially not about her. In her self-deprecation, she misspoke. There WILL always be another politician, but that won't amount to anything in most cases.
Like any writer, actor, sculptor or painter, the poet too has a right to his feelings no matter what they are. Who is anyone to judge? I would say better an ego that gets things done than a self-doubt or low-esteem that destroys and hides true talent.
susan- I do agree that self-doubt is a wasteland for talent. I would hope the spirit rises above both that and ego, to free the purity of artistic expression. Thank you for sharing your feelings on this. I like it.
I suppose what I'm really trying to say is, we can all write poetry together. No one needs to step back to give anyone else a turn. We each all have a time & space that is our own and not linked or soul-tied to another. I hold on to this view. But thank you Getzapped for helping me reflect a little & for sharing this post. I appreciated your thoughts. :-)
susan- it's cool to see how others respond to these quotes and images, as it allows new views to surface. I like the idea of writing poetry together. Like one continuous poem threaded together word by word. Peace to you.
I enjoy the outdoors, where I gather much of my creative inspiration. I find it necessary to spend time in nature, for balance and sanity. Get Zapped is where I post my photos accompanied by quotes I find intriguing. Get Zen is for sharing my Illustrations, design work, poetry, and other creative outlets. Thanks for stopping by.

I disagree with Smith today, Getzapped.
Every poet is a precious individual.
A bit of a controversial statement, don't you think. :-)
