We could use Eleanor's compassion, today. On Monday, New Orleans is bringing out the wrecking ball and tearing down its four largest public housing projects. And contrary to belief most of the units were not hurt during Katrina. Less than 10% of the people displaced will qualify to move back to the new "affordable units,"after they are built. And then HUD will finance 1000 condos to be sold in the same area. Most of the people living in these places are seniors, disabled or moms with small kids. I don't know where they will go other than to live on cardboard beneath under passes.
So many people in various industries let "progress" and greed get in the way of compassion. More and more developers are squeezing housing developments into the smallest spaces and charging a fortune for them. Many remain empty because the majority can't afford them. And we wonder why we have a homelessness problem in this country.
